Focus

TALO members explore the Future of Learning in a Networked World via e-learning, flexible delivery, online education, networked learning and web 2.0 in the respective geographical and virtual locations. The focus of FLNW2 is to engage TALO members in proactive e-learning hands-on events in a cross-cultural context with host nations, networks, groups and individuals.

Background

TALO or Teach and Learn Online is an international network of people interested in all things e-learning, flexible learning, online education, networked learning and web 2.0. TALO provides individuals with the opportunity to connect with others who share a common interest in progressing knowledge sharing in an open and diverse collaborative community. A range of active online discussion forums,blogs, wikis, and web feeds are balanced with un-conferences, swap-meets and other spontaneous face-to-face conversations. The un-conference model has been adopted as an open conversation space within all TALO events and serves to guide or in some instances challenge the perceptions of those used to conference sensibilities.

A number of inspired TALO members seeking ways to engage a wider and more culturally diverse reference group began exchanging ideas about how to action e-learning in a sustainable and realistic forum………. without all the fuss of conferencing. At swapmeets the ideas start to flow including a trip down the Mekong river, Hong Kong, a train journey with free wireless, the UK, Europe and Broome, Australia and now the FLNW2. Concious of the fact that others regard online education as self important navel gazing, the idea that came out of these discussions was to grow TALO beyond a technology focussed online information gathering, to build a robust and sustainable model of engaging others with networked technologies.

The FLNW 2 event follows on from the FLNW event which was held in New Zealand in 2006.FLNW2 came about as a result of round table discussions at the TALO Swap-Meet in Adelaide in March 2007.

TALO energy is contagious and this motivates others to embrace and implement creative activities that build social inclusion, participation, access and choice. All of this leads to appropriate and sustainable solutions for learning in a networked world. Read more…

Read about Palawan on Wikipedia. The first thing that springs to mind is distributing libre software, libre knowledge and libre culture. Things like free text books, software, video, audio etc You can easily fit an equivalent of over $10,000 worth of resouces on CD but some things are priceless so fire up and help out.

With the help of Wikiversity participants and the Wikio VoIP project we could do some really useful things.

Sahana, an entirely volunteer effort to create technology for managing large-scale relief efforts, is the recipient of the 2006 Free Software Foundation Award for Projects of Social Benefit.

Colombo, Sri Lanka and Cambridge, Massachussets—March 26, 2007—Sahana, an entirely volunteer effort to create technology for managing large-scale relief efforts, is the recipient of the 2006 Free Software Foundation Award for Projects of Social Benefit. Sahana was created, in the wake of the tsunami that devastated Southeast Asia in 2004, to compensate for the devastating consequences of a government attempt to manually manage the process of locating victims, distributing aid and coordinating volunteers.

The Free Software Award for Projects of Social Benefit is presented to a free software project that intentionally and significantly benefits society through collaboration to accomplish an important social task.

Speaking at the award ceremony, the Sahana project leader Chamindra de Silva said, “We are deeply honored to receive this award and were so excited we traveled half way around the world from Sri Lanka to attend the ceremony today. The Sahana project is all about a cohesive disaster response between multiple agencies and bringing them together to help victims. None of this would have been possible without the work of the wider free software community, and we would not have been able to bring benefit to the victims and the people who help the victims without that. It is a credit to the whole community.”

Richard Stallman, President and Founder of the Free Software Foundation, in presenting the award said, “We were inspired to create this award when we heard of the tremendous good the Sahana project was able to achieve through the use of free software. With this award we give recognition to their efforts.”

The founding team, made up of Sri Lankan technology workers, worked around the clock for three days to produce the first release of the software that was quickly adopted by their country’s government. The software resolves common coordination problems that arise during a disaster and thus facilitates the search for missing people, aid and volunteer management, and victim tracking across refugee camps. A huge thanks to all the LearnScope people for the opportunity to talk about what I love and show the practical benefits of FOSS. It was great to see Alexander Hayes, Robyn Jay, Sean Fitzgerald, Jo Kay, Stephan Ridgeway and the people I’ve listened to in LearnScope podcasts. It was nice to meet the other people that turned up as well and thanks everyone that came, they were all very nice and open to free culture. I don’t know about adult education but in secondary public education copyright is the highest cost apart from wages.

I was flown to Sydney and back to work for the day, in the morning I worked with Alex and Robyn customising the Wiki then we had a group discussion, you can see the details here.

Maybe it would have been better to focus on Mediawiki, Collaboration and Copyright but my talk was about the history of FOSS and then gave examples of FOSS, FOSS on the web and free knowledge communities. You can see the presentation here and imagine the story I told. Thanks to my brothers advice I went with just using images as my strategy to talk naturally. I think I could do much better if I had another chance. After listening to Sean Fitzgerald talk about FOSS I would give myself 4 out of 10 for speaking skill. Sean and Jo had been to Linux.conf.au and touched the Children’s Machine , that went down really well when it came to talking about it. Using the Mars Rover as the first example of FOSS was also very nice.

Read Jo Kays post “Three Cheers for FOSS and Wireless Blogging“, she took a photo of me during the talk :), I need to get an Open Source Entrepreneur power jacket. lol.

Lots more to think and write about, I’ll get more time soon.

Whoa, I’ve been called a lot of things, this is one of the good ones. I’m off to the big smoke next week to meet past and present NSW LearnScope team members and other guests. Have a look at the overview. I noticed Sean FitzGerald will be there, thats comforting, I think he understands what Free Software means to me.

I setup Mediawiki and PlanetPlanet Aggregator for NSW Learnscope. I thought I was fairly knowledgable about the Bazaar model of development but Alexander Hayes takes it to a new level. lol, I’m just joking a little about how he released earlier than I expected but with the support of some of the innovators in our networks I think we’ll get there. In open markets innovation wins, thats pretty much how it works.

So I have to put together a 50min talk in 4 days, I’ve been thinking about it for quite some time so its just a matter of putting it together, the main thing I’m worried about is my nerves at the start, I always get really nervous at the start of these things so I hope someone has some tips.

There’s so many things to talk about, I have to keep it simple. I have mostly been thinking about something like “FOSS and Web 2.0: Independence and Capability”. Lets look at something interesting about Web 2.0 and FOSS. What operating system is used for some Web 2.0 services:

Here’s an image of a slide from Downes powerpoint presentation Toward a New Knowledge 2.0 Society, I added 2.0 because thats what he says at the start and I think this 2.0 thing is pretty funny, follow that link for the audio.

For some reason he has a picture of Richard Matthew Stallman on it but he doesn’t say anything about him or include anything on his slides about him or his work. Maybe its something about truth maintenance systems that he didn’t have time to talk about.

It was a GNU Hurd developer that convinced me that its good to use FOSS on windows, some freedom is better none, even GNU Packages run on windows and most computer users run windows. So here’s a list of links. Some are equivalents to replace software on windows and some are the equivalent on GNU/Linux and some are cross platform so its stupid to call it the “Linux” equivalent. They also make the mistake of saying alternatives to commercial software. The opposite of FOSS is proprietary software.

My friend Archie Moore asked

“Can you recommend any Free (as in freedom) video editing software like premiere.”

I dont know premiere so if its obivous to anyone please leave a comment. All of the videos I’ve developed has been using free software so I think it would better to say “I want to do this, do you know any software that can do that?”

The main one I use is Avidemux, basically you can take a video, chop it all up, apply some filters, resize, crop etc, maybe add some audio and then put it all back together and save it in the format you want. I also use Blender for some things.

I use ffmpeg, ffmpeg2theora and mencoder for converting to different formats. On windows you can use mediacoder.

Probably the most powerful one is Cinelerra but it only runs on GNU/Linux.

The others I look at every now and again are DIva and Pitivi.

Last I heard Archie was in the UK or Europe so I hope he’s having a good time.

There’s also a review of his Depth of Field exhibition, thats the one I checked out.

Background to the Australian Flexible Learning Community

I like this idea “Creative, Capable People”.

Its a bit of a shame that they’re not using a free public license. Now that the responsibilities and functions of ANTA have been transferred to the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) I wonder if its possible to release that work under a free public license.

I’ve been trying to gain some perspective of local professional online education for adults. Originally its was just a very small group that controlled the web based services offered to public secondary schools here in Qld but as of the beginning of last year all the public schools have the option to use Joomla, sure some teachers complained that they cant update it with frontpage but the main thing is that it killed off that groups projects. Private school people already get way more money than the public schools, its greedy to be funded by the gov to leach even more money from the public schools by providing lame proprietary web based solutions, those solutions cost the schools thousands of dollars and don’t add any value, their like web -5.0. edna online helped change their perspective by using moodle, some of us tried to introduce foss based web solutions before that, but apparently the other techs convinced people that foss is bargain basement crap that never works properly and we’re all a bunch of unpopular political philosophy believers and made all kinds of degrading and derogatory remarks. Thats partly why I moved on to hanging out with teachers, well apart from IT teachers.

From the adults learning online perspective everything is different, some of them are pro-foss, share a very similar philosophy and have done years of research. So why hasn’t much improved for them. When you look at their edna group it becomes immediately obvious. The bulk of the techs in their group haven’t kept up with their research and don’t have the right products, skill set or business model. Worse then that they are rude, idiotic, assholes and bullshit artists. They say things like “our products enforce learning”. I can’t see myself wasting my time reading all that shit. Notice the language, thats another different thing about working with adults.

I ‘ve been discussing web.20, foss and community development with Alexander Hayes, you can read his blog. Capability and independence have always been important to me so we’ll see what happens, hopefully using things like transclusion we can stay on the same page.adult learning aflf

Mediawiki is free software, it is famous as the software platform used in the success of Wikimedia Foundation projects, the most widely known one is Wikipedia. The greatest success in the social construction of information in the world. The largest and most successful free knowledge projects in the world and all this free from proprietary contraints. Most educational institutions haven’t even comes close to this success in the advancement of human knowledge, in fact the opposite is true. Not only has it contributed to the success of Wikimedia projects but its also used in many educational projects, like Wikia, a mobile audio encyclopedia, the one laptop per child project, UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning’s Open Educational Resources Community, wikieducator, wikischolar and many, many, many others.

Mediawiki provides a simple, feature rich environment for editing and contributing. Its ease of use has no doubt been a contributing factor in the growth of human knowledge.

Save the Planet by recycling and reusing old computer hardware with the best operating system GNU/Linux.In this video I show a range of hardware that’s a least 9 years old and how useful it is with the best operating system. The commercial computer market is largely driven by vendors seeking to sell new hardware and software. There is no commercial marketing benefit in promoting reuse. GNU/Linux doesn’t require big hardware, it’s very useful if you like or need to use old and small hardware.

I also briefly mention Treacherous Computing. so make sure you are aware of it.

I’ve been spending a lot of time on Wikiversity, not so much working on a course yet though I am trying to get started on developing a course on Digital artwork for kids which would work through the basics of Tux Paint, GIMP and Blender with a focus on digital art, including how to use a digital camera to take a photo for a bloom clock project quiz that gets used to create new stamps for Tux Paint using GIMP. Simple ideas that encourage kids to get out and about and into science like getting them to try and figure out how to take a photo of lightning.

The most useful thing I’ve done so far is show people how to set up a Wikiversity blog and manually create a rss feed for your blog, a fellow aussie Michael Billington wrote a bot to generate the rss feeds but thats still being worked on by a few guys. There’s a lot happening, I’m really enjoying the Wikiversity experience, I’ve met some really good people, here’s my userpage. For instant chat join the Wikiversity-en channel on irc.

The best resources for learning Blender I’ve found so far would be OpenCourseWare - Tufts University - Blender Course and the classroom tutorial book from Blender Animation, 3D Computer Animation Utilizing Free Software . You can browse my bookmarks if you want, there’s a lot of really useful resources for learning Blender on the web.

I’m using the feed from planet TALO as my learning network page and set it as the main page with the option to read my blog. I hope this might generate some comments and discussion of the information that flows through the network. I’ve added a theme switcher and a recently released theme called mollio as my cms style theme and set it up more as a learning community site. There’s a survey so that you can make an assessment of my skills.

I’m loving planetplanet.

Planet is an awesome ‘river of news’ feed reader. It downloads news feeds published by web sites and aggregates their content together into a single combined feed, latest news first.

I don’t use my usual feed readers as often and now run a collection of planet aggregators locally on my Edubuntu system. I also have planet Venus installed, its a refactoring of planetplanet, it can use opml files and has a planet venus wordpress plugin, for my site online I’m just aggregating the planet TALO feed but in my local development environment I have both planet venus and my dev wordpress running, I have it set to use the opml file generated by my local Wordpress blogroll and the big difference is that for all the feeds it automatically adds the users as wordpress users and the posts as wordpress posts so it’s all in a neat archive. It’s a really nice system that’s easy to manage and a nice solution for building an online learning communty by taking advantage of web feeds, the blogosphere and the free market economy that it supports.

After wrestling with mod_rewrite I finally have FotoNotes working. You’ve probably seen this on flickr, here’s the info from the FotoNotes homepage:

Probably the best known derivation of FotoNotes is Flickr’s note feature. Flickr did their own implementation, but Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake is nice enough to credit me: “Greg Elin of Fotonotes fame, who is responsible for us adding the annotations you can make on Flickr photographs.”

So thanks Greg Elin and FotoNotes hackers for the code, I think it can be very useful for online learning, I’m trying to show that with the Edubuntu image above but it seems rather obvious you could take a photo of the inside of a PC and say to students identify 4 things or maybe at the Wikiversity school of plant science say identify 4 parts of this plant. Here’s the Mediawiki Fotonotes extension. If I used a bigger image for this desktop example above it would be much better. I can do that on the Wiki later.

Its really interesting how the XML is stored in the JPEG Header, hopefully we can get some comments from computer scientists talking about that, it reminds me a little of Steganography but I don’t think that has much to do with it.

Its way past my bedtime so there you go.

So I looked at some options for Wordpress. WP-MMS, WordPress Mobile Edition and Wordpress PDA plugin, they might not meet everyones needs but there’s also blogging software designed for mobile bloggers. You can get the code for easymoblog and check it out, I haven’t found an online demo yet, there’s Comoblog which was developed using easymoblog, it has some nice modules and heres Mobilog and a demo, if you look around there’s other Free_software moblog projects, that’s just a few examples, lets get back to Wordpress, by default Wordpress has a feature that allows you to send posts by email, that seems to be most common way people use moblogging they take a photo, write a brief description or story then post it via email and the attachment is displayed above or below the text. There’s also Postie which allows for more customization mostly to do with attachments.

I havent had a real good look at Blogger and Flickr but apparently you can use them for moblogging so there’s also the option to post to Flickr and display the output on Wordpress.

WP-MMS is a Plug-in which allows MMS messages from your cell-phone to be posted directly into your Wordpress Blog but has an interesting disclaimer that I have to spend more time trying to understand.

I dont own a PDA or browse the web with my mobile phone so please if you have a mobile phone or PDA visit my site and tell me what you see, a screenshot or photo would be really nice. Nothing comes close to OLPC for mlearning :)

One of the things I should have mentioned in the Wordpress post is using the Feed List plugin to display rss feeds on posts and pages, thats what I’m doing for this post, I use delicious or scuttle to tag some bookmarks with todays date and then just insert a single line of text, below you see the results.

Thats right, its Wordpress. Heres an overview of how I use Wordpress.

Wordpress is Free_software, its an easy to use publishing system. Your looking at it in action right now. There’s a huge collection of themes and plugins available for it, you can browse the themes, the plugins, and the widgets.

View my statistics and a full list of the plugins I currently have enabled.

My favorite plugin is the one that re-posts my posts to my blogger blog, everyone seems to want a plugin that allows them to write once post everywhere, rss helps a lot with that but not in the same way.

The list of plugins I have installed is generated by a plugin itself so lets look at some statistics plugins I’m using. The Click Counter shows which links are popular, Counterize shows how many people visit the site, when they came, where they’ve come from and some info about their browser, IP 2 Nation shows where people are from in their comments, Browser Sniff shows what browser and OS people use in their comments , Viper’s Plugins Used, Downloads Stats, FeedStats, Word Stats are all pretty self explanatory, some of them draw pretty graphs and you can run custom queries. Plugins that are interactive for feedback and learning. Theres wbExam, wbquiz, Survey Fly, Democracy poll that you see in my sidebar, Pierre’s Wordspew is the Live chat I use and Email Contact form.

Post enhancing plugins . I use aLinks, with aLinks you set up a list of Keywords/phrases that are converted to links, it saves me the hassle of remembering sites and going through the whole insert link process, I can just keep typing. Wikipedia Link enables me to use Mediawiki markup for links to Wikipedia articles, you can see it when I type [ [Kangaroo] ] without the spaces it converts it to Kangaroo, Audio player is a flashy little mp3 player, when I include a MP3 in the post it auto adds itself. Code Snippet is for adding code in posts. Geo works with Plug ‘n’ Play Google Map for including maps in posts, here’s my map page. Polite-ifier fixes bad language. Gravatar is for users to include their gravatar in comments. SimpleTags and Ultimate Tag Warrior are for tagging posts, UTW works with technorati tags and the really nice thing about it is that it generates rss feeds from tags which is very useful, it also works with YouTube Related Videos to include videos related to the post. WP-Print is so people can print my posts. WordPress Email Notification Plugin v2.3.1, people on the list get my posts by email. XSD Snapr previews links in a bubble. wp-notable adds the social buttons to posts. Subscribe To Comments is so people receive comments by email for the posts they’re interested in.

I wont go through the whole list but out of the remaining plugins here’s some of the ones I think you may be interested in. Organizer is used for file management. IM Online Plugin/Widget, Link Indication, Postie for emailing posts with media attachments, Progressbar Widget, Translate, XD Forum, myStatus.

If you host your own Wordpress site you probably will just want to go through the list and the plugins that I don’t currently have enabled won’t show up in the list so here they are. Addictions, Live, NZ Shopping Cart, post2pdf, PledgeBank.com, Skype Button, Theme Switcher, del.icio.us widget, Google Search widget.

Apart from all that there are the default features of Wordpress like options to save your posts as drafts, manage your posts, pages and moderate comments, password protect posts, add users, create pages, display recent comments and posts in your sidebar, use widgets, view incoming links and the common features of blogs like web feeds and displaying posts in reverse chronological order and the comment system.

The E-learning baboons will always tell you what you can’t do so just shake your stick at them and they will go away.

After reading Alex’s 5 things post I starting thinking about all kinds of things, some of the teachers in TALO often remind me that life experience is valuable and who we are and where we’re from can be important, I like to think its what I do thats important, it sounds cliche and if you work online its easy to take that approach but their students come from a diverse range of backgrounds and its not that simple. What I wanted to talk about is www.nswlearnscope.com Alex mentioned my site.

If your looking for a little more home grown account of what constitutes a mashed web interface then check out Chris at Superuser. It is evident that we have a new web growing like a virus ready to Multiply our posts, entertain new audiences and engage learners in the space that they frequent within.

Its nice to get a mention, I wonder if we will ever see wiki.nswlearnscope.com, planet.nswlearnscope.com or something similiar. I noticed they’re using Wordpress as their blogging platform and I think they can get a lot more value out of it particularly for community development.

There’s some simple and cost effective things they could do with the software so that in a way it acts more as a dynamic community space, showcasing and connecting the nswlearnscope projects and their members, theres many benefits to it and it makes good business sense to be on the same page. I also noticed that there’s no search engine optimisation and the most useful links are linking away from their site and as far as I can tell it doesn’t look like they are keeping track of that, its important to know how people use your site, it helps to see which parts of your project are lagging behind.

I think I’ll have to do a mini review of Wordpress.

Recenlty we read Eben Moglens speech “Free Software and the Death of Proprietary Culture” and now lets check out his keynote address, titled “Software and Community in the Early 21st Century” presented at Plone Conference 2006 on October 25, 2006 in Seattle, WA. You can read the transcript by Geof Glass on his blog “Eben Moglen on Free Software and Social Justice“.

Heres a look at some of what he said.

We have brought forward now the possibility of distributing everything that every public education system uses freely everywhere to everyone: true universal public education for the first time.

You and I, and the people who came before us, have been rolling a very large rock uphill a very long time. We wanted freedom of knowledge in a world that didn’t give it, which burned people for their scientific or religious beliefs. We wanted democracy, by which we meant originally the rule of the many by the many, and the subjection of today’s rulers to the force of law. And we wanted a world in which distinctions among persons were based not on the color of skin, or even the content of character, but just the choices that people make in their own lives. We wanted the poor to have enough, and the rich to cease to suffer from the diseases of too much. We wanted a world in which everybody had a roof, and everybody had enough to eat, and all the children went to school. And we were told, always, that it was impossible.

In other words, the free world now produces technology whose ability to reorient power in the larger traditional economy is very great. We have magnets; we can move the iron filings around. We can also change the infrastructure of social life. That OLPC has every textbook on earth. That OLPC is a free MIT education. That OLPC is a hand-powered thick-net router. When you close the lid as a kid and put it in the shelf at night, the main CPU shuts down – but the 802.11 gear stays running all night long on the last few pulls of the string. And it routes packets all night long and it keeps the mesh. The village is a mesh when the kids have green or purple or orange boxes. And all you need’s a downspout somewhere, and the village is on the Net. And when the village is on the Net, everybody in the village is a producer of something: services, knowledge, culture, art, YouTube TV.

But a little more political consciousness about it and a more attempt to get other people to understand not just “what” but “why” would help a lot. Because people are getting used to the “what”.

“Oh yeah, Firefox, I use it all the time.”

“Why?”

“Why, cuz Internet…”

“No no no no no. Not why do you use it, why does it exist?”

“Oh I dunno, some people did it.”

That’s the moment, all right, that’s the moment, that’s the one where that annoying Stallman voice should enter the mind, okay. Free As In Freedom, Free As In Freedom, tell people it’s free as in freedom. Tell them that if you don’t tell them anything else. Because they need to know.

We’ve spent a long time hunting for freedom. Many of us lost our lives trying to get it more than once. We have sacrificed a great deal for generations, and the people who have sacrificed most we honor most when we can remember them. And some of them have been entirely forgotten. Some of us are likely to be forgotten too. And the sacrifices we make aren’t all going to go with monuments and honors. But they’re all going to contribute to the end. The end is a good end if we do it right. We have been looking for freedom for a very long time. The difference is, this time, we win.

Second Life viewer available under GNU GPL

The Second Life Viewer source code has been released under the GNU General Public License, the most well known and widely used Free_software License. Read the press release. I haven’t had a really close look at the code, at a glance it looks like you would have to install some non-free software to build the client or disable the sound. Its tempting to build it but I think I’ll wait a while, someones likely to build an Ubuntu package though I’m not sure they’ll be able to distribute it. You can download Second Life binaries free of charge and play it online for Mac OSX and windows, the Linux client is still alpha. I’ve used 2 previous versions of the Linux client and they seemed fine so if the thought of compiling source code isnt your thing then download that version.

Wikipedia: Second_Life

Second Life (abbreviated SL) is an online virtual world provided by Linden Lab which came to international attention in late 2006 and early 2007. Through a client program, subscription-based users interact with other users through avatars, providing an advanced social network service.

While SL is referred to as a game, it, in general, does not have points, scores, winners or losers, levels, an end-strategy, or most of the other characteristics of games. Users, who are often called “Residents” amongst themselves, explore, meet other users, participate in individual and group activities or “events”, buy items, virtual property and services from one another. Long-term users learn new skills and mature socially, climbing a virtual hierarchy.

In Second Life, some people earn a living, some big companies have their own islands and hold global conferences, you can wander around and run into well known celebrities and Harvard Law School offers portions of its course in the virtual world. Read the Second_Life article on Wikipedia for more information and statistics.

There’s been a lot of discussion about the use of virtual environments in education some of them use dungeons and dragons escapist fantasy MMORPG’s, Second Life is better than that, rather then assembling your gang of undead necromancers and troll warriors to go slay the elf godess for her +50 charisma breastplate and hoard it from your guild members, you do cool stuff like create things and add value to the world.

For people that follow Planet TALO you will have seen that Jokay has been actively exploring the use of Second Life in education for quite some time now so make sure you visit her blog and check out her research. She’s developed some really interesting activities and built up an area for training.

I put together a widget for the picasaWeb Wordpress plugin.

Its a very crude hack, If I get time I’ll do it properly if someone else doesn’t get there first, nonetheless its a start and some people might find it useful.

A big thanks to Bill Rawlinson for the picasaWeb plugin. Its very nice to be able to have a plugin for both Flickr and Picasa. Also thanks to Kaf for the example widget, I basically modified it a little for the widget.

Mugshot mini review

Wikipedia: Mugshot_(software)

Mugshot is a community software system created by Red Hat. Unlike social networking websites, it also has a desktop client component. It is meant to facilitate real-world interactions with friends, and make one’s normal computer use more social. Current features include ‘Web Swarm’ which lets users share web links and join in conversations about them, and ‘Music Radar’, which displays which songs a user is listening to, and allows conversations about the song. Many features are planned, including ‘TV Party’.

Mugshot is free software. “Most” of the client code is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). Various parts of the server code are distributed under the GPL, the Open Software License 3.0, the Apache License, and the MIT License. All of which are free software licences.

First I visited the Mugshot home page to set up my own Mugshot. When you set up your account include the other social networking sites that you use.

I’m using Delicious, Digg, Youtube and my blog, when I or someone in my groups or network make a blog post, add a bookmark to delicous or use one of the other social networking sites its automatically added to the stacker. Below is a couple of screenshots of my home page, the image on the right is the bottom half of my home page, the stacker, its a bit like a news reader.

I installed the Mugshot stacker. Like the other desktop applications I use regularly, its on my desktop tool tray which makes it really convenient to check when theres new activities.

Its not essential to install the Mugshot Stacker desktop application, its also available on your homepage. The thing I really liked about the stacker was that when someone added images to their flickr account or a video to youtube you could click on the entry and preview the thumbnails, with blog posts you can preview and visit the post, with feeds and webswarms you get a short description, you can share them with your groups and network and also start/join a chat about it.

As the title says this is a mini review, visit the Mugshot home page for more information. In my opinion this is the best social networking site I’ve used so far, its Free_software so you know more features are coming and its only going to get better. Developers can visit the Mugshot Wiki for more information, they’re also hiring. Google users might be insterested in adding the stacker as a Google gadget. You can see my Mugshot mini badge on the far right sidebar at the top.

A couple of my mates use myspace so I hope they bother setting up a mugshot, I also hope all the bloggers I know set one up.

Using QEMU on Troubleshooting

$ sudo apt-get install qemu

Download the latest stable image. I downloaded this image.

Extract the image.

$ bunzip2 olpc-redhat-stream-development-build-193-20061203_1727-devel_ext3.img.bz2

Use qemu to launch the OLPC environment.

$ qemu -hda olpc-redhat-stream-development-build-193-20061203_1727-devel_ext3.img

Press the “a” key when you see this screen.

Press the “a” key again when you see this screen.

Append apm=off to the end of the line and press enter.

You can also replace vga=0×311 with vga=789 for 800×600(24bit color). Here’s more info on vga.

At the login screen your keyboard and mouse might not work.

Press Alt + Ctrl + 3 to enter the terminal mode of the OLPC, login with username root and press enter for password. Then type.

$ modprobe i8042

Bring your network up by typing

$ dhclient

Press Alt + Ctrl + 1 to return to the graphical mode of the OLPC.

If your using windows then my guides on running GNU/Linux on windows might help, my old video of OLPC Fedora Core on windows Video(flash) shows a skinny version of fedora core that was used in the early days of OLPC so I’m thinking about screencasting my latest efforts but if you just watch this video you can see the results.

Learn by doing, remember the OLPC project is an education project not a laptop project. I especially enjoyed playing with the Squeak Etoys Activity.

Matthew Fulmer has been hard at work putting together an annotated list of Squeak tutorials. Check them out, its the best list. Some software developers might be interested in PataPata, it’s a pythonic version of Squeak in early phase of development.
